With almost 25 kilometres of unpaved road, the medium route of GeoGravel Tuscany 2023 is an adventure to discover corners far from civilisation and villages crystallised in time. Among paths that cut the forests of the nature reserves in two and roads surrounded by olive groves where here and there ancient farms appear, the route crosses the Monterufoli Nature Reserve, 4828 hectares of forests and waterfalls in the heart of the Metalliferous Hills.

The protagonist is the charming village of Querceto, where Italian history is intertwined with that of a great family, told by the wine produced here for generations. A unique experience that enchants the graveler with its potential, the landscape and the fascination of geothermal energy coming from the heart of the earth.

The route

Starting from Pomarance, the medium-distance route of GeoGravel Tuscany 2024 shares the first part of the route with the short one. Unfolding among fields and ancient farmhouses, it begins to climb towards Libbiano with a winding road where to enjoy pleasant views of the landscape on the hills below. We then venture into the Monterufoli Reserve via the 'Strade Grigie' (Grey Roads) akin to the gravel spirit, which continue for kilometres in the middle of the wilderness. After this spell away from civilisation, we arrive at Querceto, the perfect village to stop for a break, enjoy the scenery and relish some local specialities. You then return to the provincial road, through a long scenic descent through postcard-perfect scenery, to take another short break at La Gabella, a must for locals where you can breathe in the authenticity of country life. After a few more kilometres of asphalt road, we reach another diversion that takes participants off the beaten track, with a nice stretch of fairly demanding grey road that also includes some fun hairpin bends through the woods. Back on the provincial road, we start climbing again to Serrazzano and then continue in the direction of Larderello where the route runs by the Enel Green Power plant at Gabbro before skirting Montecerboli and through the woods surrounding the village. Then, we return to Pomarance among farms, countryside and endless hills.
