Route SHORT

With about 18 kilometres of gravel trails through forests and geothermal power plants, the short route of GeoGravel Tuscany 2024 is an intense sneak peek of the warm heart of Tuscany. Between gravel sections and suggestive alleys, the route crosses the Monterufoli Nature Reserve, 4828 hectares of forests and waterfalls in the heart of the Metalliferous Hills. 

The protagonists are the villages of Libbiano and Serrazzano, small medieval gems where you can immerse yourself in history and experience the evocative and mysterious atmosphere of the Tuscan hinterland as well as discover the value of an area devoted to geothermal energy.  

The route

Starting from Pomarance, the short route, like the medium and long ones, winds along tarmac roads in excellent condition through fields and ancient farmhouses to climb towards Libbiano on a winding road where to enjoy pleasant views of the landscape on the hills below. After Libbiano, we venture into the Monterufoli Reserve along dirt tracks suited to the gravel spirit. We then return to the provincial road to reach Serrazzano and continue until we detour onto a secondary road that runs alongside Montecerboli, immersed in the woods surrounding the village. Here you will skirt the Gabbro power station, the largest in terms of MegaWatt production in the entire geothermal area.

Before returning to Pomarance, a diversion on a dirt road surrounded by Mediterranean scrub provides a close-up view of the grandeur of one of the power plants in the Larderello geothermal district, continuing towards the finish. The finale is all on asphalt road, along which you can enjoy the panorama of the countryside and hills with the village of Volterra in the background.
