Route ULTRA

With more than two hundred and fifty kilometres - 85 km gravel roads - between the Etruscan Coast and the Siena area, Geogravel's "I Temerari" route, i.e. The Daredevils, is dedicated to expert gravel riders seeking raw emotion and extreme adventure, in close contact with wild nature. More than 100 kilometres of unpaved road characterise this itinerary, making the unique atmosphere of these hills even more fascinating. Some of the most evocative parts are certainly the passage through the historic Ornellaia vineyards - where the world-famous wine of the same name is produced - the full immersion inside the Berignone Nature Reserve, and the Passo dell'Incrociati, where one can enjoy the landscape over Colle di Val d'Elsa and Siena. More than fifteen hours on the bike face to face with the most authentic soul of Tuscany devoted to daredevil off-road expeditions. 

The route

Starting from Pomarance, the ‘I Temerari’ route of GeoGravel Tuscany 2024 is organised in two loops, the first venturing towards the Siena area and then returning to Pomarance, and the second tracing the route of the Lungo della domenica. From Pomarance we head towards Volterra, first passing the famous Saline and then Casole d'Elsa. At Km 82 the daredevils will find a small refreshment point and assistance centre and from there they will return towards Pomarance through the villages of Monteguidi and San Dalmazio.

In Pomarance they will stop at the Piazzone for the stamping and there those who wish can stop at the GeoParty, rest and start again the next morning, or start again immediately on the Lungo track to complete the most challenging and fascinating of the GeoGravel Tuscany tracks.

From Pomarance, we begin to climb towards Libbiano on a winding road from which we enjoy pleasant views of the landscape on the hills below. Next, we venture into the Monterufoli - Caselli Nature Reserve via gravel paths akin to the gravel spirit that continue for kilometres in the wilderness. After this parenthesis away from civilisation, we arrive at Querceto, the perfect village to stop for a break, enjoy the scenery and sample some local specialities. Through a long scenic descent amid postcard-perfect landscapes, you then return to the provincial road, but only to take another long and enchanting dirt road towards Bibbona that crosses the Magona Nature Reserve. Once you reach this village with its medieval history, where you can already breathe in the salty air coming from the Tyrrhenian Sea, you continue first towards the Etruscan Coast with the sea in the background, then up the cypress-lined avenue towards Bolgheri, a famous place where you must stop for a lunch in the name of true Tuscan character and a wine loved the world over. The return is another full immersion in gravel trails in the Magona nature reserve and the wild Mediterranean scrub that characterises this corner of Tuscany. After woods populated by a few farms, we return to the Provincial Road at Canneto, passing again through the Monterufoli - Caselli Nature Reserve and rejoining the route
